The public awards also Julien Gachadoat ex aequo with Im Go Eun for the work SEE(N).

The artists were selected from 264 entries from 45 different countries worldwide and nominated by an international jury consisting of Peter Weibel (Director of ZKM Karlsruhe), Jean-Marie Dallet (Professor and Commissioner of Update I), Philippe Van Cauteren (Director of SMAK Gent), Françoise Meesen (Foundation Liedts-Meesen), Dirk De Wit (Director of BAM, Flemish Institute for visual, audiovisual and media art), Stef Van Bellingen (Consultant for Zebrastraat-artistic leader VZW Warp), Christine Van Assche (Curator New Medias Nouveaux Medias Centre Pompidou-Paris), Art Yan (Organiser of the exhibition E-Arts Festival, Shangai), Nick Ervinck (artist-winner of the Update_2 public award), Julien Maire (artist- winner of the Update_2 jury's award)

The works of the New Technological Art Award were exhibited parallel to update-3| body sound (April 16 and June 20, 2010) an exhibition held by the New Media department of Centre Pompidou, designed by the Bureau of Mésarchitecture, Paris, and realised by the Zebrastraat, courtesy of the Liedts-Meesen Foundation, Ghent.

History of the biennal Update

The first exhibition Update (Interactive Digital Media Art) was first held in 2006, supervised by Curator Jean-Marie Dallet. The 2008 exhibition, Update_2 was a cooperation with ZKM, Karlsruhe and curator Peter Weibel. It exhibited several works of ZKM's (Zentrum für Kunst un Medientechnologie Karlsruhe) permanent collection. update-3| body sound sprang forth from a cooperation with Centre Pompidou, under the artistic guidance of exhibition commissioner Christine Van Assche.

'Update' strives to broaden the context of contemporary art practice and classical media with works that are creative and meaningful in their use of modern and new technologies. This entails incorporating sound and image, using new materials and new evolutions in communication, telecommunication and broadcasting.

Information, communication and computer science, as well as interactivity are the main focuses.

Zebrastraat – Ghent, Belgium

Zebrastraat is a truly unique project, its three pillars of living, experiencing and meeting serving as bridges between housing, culture and the economy. The Liedts-Meesen Foundation thus demonstrates that close linkage of these activities and functions is at once feasible, enriching and stimulating.

The laboratory where this social-cultural experiment takes place is De Cirk, formerly a dilapidated housing-block on the Zebrastraat in Ghent, dating back to 1906. The utmost care having been taken over the renovation of the run-down building, the transformation resulted in an architectural jewel. Today the site includes 72 apartments, a meeting-place, five conference rooms and a spacious exhibition hall over two floors. The multifunctional complex is built around an oval inner court, itself the focus of diverse events.
