VARIOUS LOCATIONS - POITIERS

24 - 30 NOVEMBER 2008

make art – OpenOS is an international festival dedicated to the integration of Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) in digital art. The festival offers performances, presentations, workshops and an exhibition, focused on the encounter between digital art and free software.

This year make art focuses on the OpenOS: artistic, free, creative use of the Operating System, hackability and modularity of FLOSS and GNU/Linux, scripts as digital glue between applications, enhanced possibilities for the technical expression of ideas, user empowerment and artistic freedom.

The festival is organized by GOTO10, a collective of international artists and programmers, dedicated to Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) and digital arts. GOTO10 aims to support and grow digital art projects and tools for artistic creation, located on the blurry line between software programming and art.

GOTO10 lives on servers, IRC channels, lists and streams. They don't have any static physical meeting place. They organize events throughout Europe, independently and in collaboration with like-minded organizations. Their aim is to live within this network of machines, people and places, to develop and teach new and existing tools, to produce, experiment and play.

Exhibition:

This year's exhibition will explore the abyss of the real and virtual machines and the hidden activity of the operating system. You will see works that will puzzle you, make you think about what is our relationship with networks and computers, and we will not forget to make you play a bit with it! Danja Vassiliev (RU) "m/e/m/e 2.0", Valentina Vuksic (DE) "Sei Personaggi pt 2", Julian Oliver (NZ) "LevelHead", Dave Griffiths (GB) "Al Jazari", Pall Thayer (IS) "exist.pl"

Concerts:

"Placard"
The Placard headphone and streaming festival comes back to Poitiers this year in a little nest inside the make art exhibition. Experimental and electronic music will flow to your ears, and you're invited to bring your best pillow to enjoy a cosy and lazy evening with us. Limited number of headphones, feel free to bring your own. Canetoad Orchestra (CA/IN/GB), One Man Nation (SG), Frey (NZ), Ed Kelly (GB), _rrr (MX), ...

"Live-coding"
They have terminals, shells, prompts and they like to show them. Members of the TOPLAP will make music and audiovisual performances during this special night dedicated to "live-coding". beep($note, 40); beep($note, 40); beep($note, 40); !!! Matthew Yee-King (GB), Alex McLean (GB), Dave Griffiths (GB), Robert Atwood (CA)

Screenings:

In partnership with Le Dietrich:
What is free software, open source, and why should we bother? This evening we will screen two documentaries that explain the root of this worldwide phenomena and its relationship with free culture and the philosophy of openness. And just because we're nice we're also showing two shorts made with FLOSS! Revolution-OS (USA), The Codebreakers (GB), Elephants Dream (NL), Big Buck Bunny (NL)

Workshop:

"Pure Data and sound design"
This 3-days workshop taught by Andy Farnell and assisted by Stéphane Léveillé (FR) is focused on sound design and Pure Data software. It aims to familiarize with the basics of sound, audio synthesis and effects using Pd. While learning how to build their own sounds and musical tools, the participants will end up playing all together over the local network.
