Per il secondo anno, il premio internazionale Prix Ars Electronica ha incluso la categoria Digital Communities al suo interno. Questa categoria focalizza la sua attenzione sui progetti che valorizzano l''impatto sociale di internet, nonchè i social software, le mobile communications e i wireless network. Questa categoria in altre parole dimostra il potenziale politico e sociale dei network digitali a cui Ars Electronica quest'anni ha deciso di dedicare 1 Golden Nica, 2 Premi di Distinzione e 12 Menzioni d'Onore.

Il vincitore di questa edizione, appena annunciato online, è il progetto indiano Akshaya, un'iniziativa atta a colmare il digital devide esistente nella regione del Kerala, tramite 6000 postazioni internet. I soldi del premio contribuiranno quindi alla realizzazione completa del programma.

Ma particolare attenzione è giusto dare anche alle menzioni d'onore della giuria di Ars Electronica, che quest'anno ha deciso di premiare non solo Free Software Foundation e GNU, ma anche il progetto italiano ( o meglio i progetti itlaiani dato che al giuria di Linz ha pensato bene di accoprare i progetti) di media hacktivism NGV/Telestreet per aver creato una rete di canali alternativi all'impero di Berlusconi. Onore quindi al progetto, che riporta l'Italia sul trono dell'Ars Electronica dopo moltissimi anni (uno degli ultimi fu Mario Canali, pioniere dell'arte digitale in Italia) e che testimonia come anche ne nostro paese si sia creata una rete di attivista di strada e di canali televisivi aletrnativi che, nonostante la cronica mancanza di fondi, riesce a operare in mondo efficace e piuttosto capillare.

Altre menzioni d'onore sono state assegnate a servizi come Upmystreet E-Democracy, al servizio di accomodation Couchsurfers el blog sullo Tsunami Tsunamihelp. Sicuramente la tendenza dei premi assegnati in questa sezione è stata quella di vlorizzare i progetti in cui Internet è utilizzato soprattutto per lo scambio di informazioni. The Borneo Project (Malesia), Catcomm (Usa/Brasile), Huaral.org (Perù), Kubatana (Zimbawe)

TXTmob (Usa), il programma sms sviluppato dalla IAA e utilizzato come strumento di protesta è stato premiato per la sua specializzata esecuzione del caos. Infine la free media bank Wikimedia Commons (Usa), costola del progetto Wikipedia, ha ricevuto una nomination speciale
