Assolutamente originale e perfettamente in linea con la filosofia base dell'utilizzo sociale e interattivo dei nuovi media il progetto sviluppato e pubblicato online da parte dell'americano John Geraci presso l'Iteractive Telecommunication Program di New York.

Grafedia è un sistema che consente di linkare scritte e testi esistenti nel mondo fisico, nella realtà quindi, a immagini, video, suoni e qualsiasi altro contenuto multimediale. Le scritte possono essere riportate ovunque, sui muri delle strade, nei bagni pubblici, su cartoline o su lettere di qualsiasi natura o possono essere tatuati sul corpo di qualcuno.

Il procedimento è semplice quanto efficace: un potenziale autore sceglie una parola, manda poi un media file dal suo cellulare (o dal proprio computer sul server di grafedia.net) per la parola scelta all'indirizzo "myword@grafedia.net" e infine scrive nella realtà la parola stessa preoccupandosi di scriverla in blu e sottolineata (come un iperlink). La parola sarà quindi effettivamente linkata al suo contenuto multimediale e saranno a disposizione di tutti anche mediante tecnologie mobile chiedendolo all'indirizzo "myword@grafedia.net".

Immediato il successo all'interno dei confini della metropoli americana (e non solo). In brevissimo tempo sembra che New York si sia trasformata in un grande contenitore multiemdiale e in un'enorme pagina web, in cui moltissime persone hanno la potenizlaità di scambiarsi messaggi, di dialogare a distanza, di strutturare storie o poesie interattive in spazi pubblici, mediante una semplice interfaccia che consente di usufruire di spazi pubblici come delle pagine di Internet
